The art of problem solving

The art of problem solving

I spend a lot of time solving people's problems. They come and see me with a sitution which has been keeping them awake at nights and in almost every case, they go away with a solution. How?

A typical question would be "Can a company be a beneficary of my trust and how do I put my assets into it?"

Now, the first thing to realise is that this question is not the problem, it is related to what the client thinks may be the solution of their problem. So I don't even answer questions like that.

My approach is by no means structured, but it generally follows a fairly well trodden path.

The first thing is to understand the background or context in which the problem arose. This is for two reasons. Firstly, I get a feel for the client and his/her personality. This may affect the recommendations that I propose. Secondly, I want to find if there's anything in the background that must be taken into account in order for the solution to be compatible with all of the circumstances.

Next, I want to know, not what the client thinks the problem is, but what it really is. This requires a fair amount of skill and experience, but fortunately, there's rarely anything new, so I kind of know what to look for once I've got all of the background. It is the most critical part of the process, because once you truly understand a problem, the solution is usually staring you in the face.

There are a number of reasons why people don't recognise the obvious.

  1. They didn't fully understand the problem.
  2. They may not have enough knowledge or experience to know all the options.
  3. The solution may not be palatable.
